Have you ever felt like no-one was listening? Yesterday, in the middle of a meeting I burst out with “I feel like I’m not being heard!!!” It was a moment where I felt like my words were flowing down the drain without clearing away a bit of the mud in the conversation.
This morning I read an interesting statistic. You see we only remember about 20% of what we hear. Why? You see, we listen at a rate of 125 to 250 words per minute. At the same time we think at 1,000 to 3,000 words per minute. So while other people are speaking, our minds are raging ever onward.
I conclude that listening must be an exercise in slowing the mind. And I now understand why some personality styles are better listeners. They take things more slowly.
